• Local Celebrities at Summer Theatre’s “Spelling Bee”

Clockwise from top: Brittany Bara, Scott Sowinski, Vanessa Moyen (11), Cody Strand (13), Will Carlyon (21).

The Summer Theatre in Meredith Village will open its final production of the season, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” on August 17th at 8:00 at the Interlakes High School Community Auditorium. This new Broadway musical, which will run for one week only, will feature local celebrities including the Common Man entrepreneur, Alex Ray and Pat Kelly of WLNH. Nancy Barry, producer, said “We are currently talking to the Governor’s office. Spelling Bee sounded like fun to the Governor and he and Dr. Lynch would like to participate.” The whole idea started with Broadway producer “Barbara Whitman” whose son performed as Friedrich in “The Sound of Music” last year. “I was a little worried that the title wasn’t well known” says Barry, “But after seeing the show, I knew we had to do it!” The show is all heart. Its about these champion spellers who are a bit nerdy and very intense. For each of them, this championship spelling bee is a cathartic discovery on their journey. Will Carlyon, Barbara Whitman’s son, plays Chip Talentino, the previous years winner. Will, who is only nineteen, grew up with the creation of “Spelling Bee” happening all around him so it is only fitting that be here performing.

Performances of “Spelling Bee” are August 17th through the 22nd. Tuesday through Saturday at 8:00 and Sunday at 7:00 with Matinees on Wednesday at 2:00 and a special family day matinee on Saturday at 2:00.

    What Our Patrons Say

We just wanted to let you know how thoroughly we enjoyed “Fiddler” this past Friday. The staging was inventive (love the use of the back screen). The dancing was creative in so small a space. (Where do you find so many boys who obviously had ballet training?) And the “Klezmer” clarinetist was a gift. To have a live combo instead of canned recorded music was greatly appreciated. We look forward to the rest of your season. — Rosalie & Bruce Hanson
